ENGLISH DEPARTMENT
OVERVIEW
The English Department strives to develop thoughtful, enthusiastic
readers and skillful writers. Our courses stress close reading of literary and non-fiction works,
vocabulary development, critical analysis of texts, and clear expression of ideas.
Through an
understanding of relevant literary movements and writers’ techniques, students can connect
themes in the texts to their own experiences and to issues in modern life. Students write in
various modes with an emphasis on expository writing and use a multi-step writing process to
improve their control of the elements of effective communication.
